Even Quads is a card game created by the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM). It celebrates women in mathematics: the official AWM deck features portraits and short biographies of 64 female mathematicians.
The game is played with a deck of 64 cards. Each card has three attributes — color, shape, and number — each taking one of 4 possible values. A Quad is a set of exactly four cards such that, for every attribute, the values across the four cards are either all equal, all different, or two-and-two. Equivalently, no attribute may be distributed three-and-one. Even Quads is a relative of the well-known game SET, but the two-and-two condition makes it play quite differently.
The game starts with 8 cards placed face up. If no player finds a Quad, the players jointly verify that no Quad is present, and a 9th or even 10th card is added.
Properties
- The game is designed so that any three given cards determine a unique fourth. Find out for yourself why!
- We are not aware of a proof, but we were told that among any 10 cards, there is always a Quad present.
- The game continues until the deck is exhausted, or until play stalls with 8 final cards that contain no further Quad.
- We usually play collaboratively rather than competitively.
Playing with Kwarto
We discovered by accident that one can play this game with the card game Kwarto, whose cards carry exactly the same combinatorial structure — four attributes each taking four values — making it perfectly suited for playing Even Quads with the same rules.

Gespielt wird mit einem Deck aus 64 Karten. Jede Karte besitzt drei Attribute — Farbe, Form und Zahl —, die jeweils einen von vier möglichen Werten annehmen. Ein Quad ist eine Menge aus genau vier Karten, bei der für jedes Attribut die Werte der vier Karten entweder alle gleich, alle verschieden oder zwei-und-zwei sind. Äquivalent dazu darf kein Attribut drei-und-eins verteilt sein. Even Quads ist ein Verwandter des bekannten Spiels SET, doch die Zwei-und-zwei-Bedingung macht es spielerisch deutlich anders.
Das Spiel beginnt mit 8 offen ausgelegten Karten. Findet kein Spieler ein Quad, wird gemeinsam geprüft, dass kein Quad vorhanden ist, und eine 9. oder sogar 10. Karte kommt hinzu.
Eigenschaften
- Das Spiel ist so gestaltet, dass je drei beliebige Karten eine eindeutige vierte bestimmen. Finde selbst heraus, warum!
- Ein Beweis ist uns nicht bekannt, aber wir wurden informiert, dass unter je 10 Karten stets ein Quad zu finden ist.
- Das Spiel endet, wenn das Deck aufgebraucht ist oder das Spiel mit 8 Restkarten stagniert, die kein weiteres Quad enthalten.
- Wir spielen üblicherweise kooperativ statt kompetitiv.
Spielen mit Kwarto
Wir haben zufällig entdeckt, dass man dieses Spiel mit dem Kartenspiel Kwarto spielen kann. Dessen Karten tragen exakt dieselbe kombinatorische Struktur — vier Attribute mit jeweils vier Werten — und eignen sich damit hervorragend, um Even Quads nach denselben Regeln zu spielen.
